“Into the Backing” commissioned in February of 1998
is a 5 metre purpose built Cairns Custom Craft designed for
up to 2 anglers plus the guide. The boat was built with the
fly and lure caster in mind and features a large uncluttered
deck, extreme stability and heaps of waterproof stowage under
the front and rear casting decks. With safe under gunnel stowage
for up to six fully rigged flyrods there is no worries about
how your rods are stored. Powered by a quiet 75hp 4 stroke Mercury
outboard the boat offers superior fuel economy and range. |

Fly tackle should comprise of a good saltwater 8 or 9wt with
a good saltwater reel to suit. Flies to bring include clousers,
pink things, surf candies, crab patterns. Some profile flies
are handy for chasing the bigger Queenfish, Mackerel and GT’s.
A 7wt is fun and easy to cast all day on the beach though sometimes
a 10, an 11 or a 12wt is a must for the brutes out in the shipping
channel or in amongst the bait schools.
Conventional tackle should be a good 6-8kg baitcaster with good
quality line, with most people opting for braided line. A good
6-10kg spin rod is also handy and should not be overlooked as
it can be an easier option. The lures that I recommend are Kilalure
Terminator 2’s, Gold Bombers, Tilsan barra lures, Halco
Lazer Pros to name a few. Bumper Bar jigs in size 2.5-4, Raider
jigs or most chrome slices work well. Any poppers work at various
times and should not be left behind. Soft plastics work really
well with the best I have found being the 100mm Squidgies in
silver fox and neon colours.

Weipa
is situated in Far North Queensland on the western side of Cape
York Peninsula. Weipa is serviced by a commercial airline with
same day connections with most major cities on the east coast,
It is a one hour flight from Cairns. To drive to Weipa it is
an approximate 12 hours from Cairns, the road is only accessible
during the dry season, from March to November and is recommended
for 4WD vehicles only.
Three major rivers in the Weipa area have been closed to commercial
gill netting for over 20 years. This has led to the rivers and
coastline being abound with a diverse range of fish species.
With the predominant breeze being offshore, this makes the inshore
beach fishing great for the sightcasting flyfisherman.
